The Power of Gratitude

Gratitude used to be a concept I brushed off quite easily. However, the more I learn about it, the more I realize its ability to transform the lens through which you see the world. So, today I’d like to share what I’ve learned with you. In this blog, we’ll explore how actively practicing gratitude can boost your mood, improve your relationships, and enhance your physical/mental health.

To start, what is gratitude?

Gratitude is recognizing the good things in your life and appreciating the people, experiences, opportunities, and even failures that make you who you are. It’s taking a moment to reflect on all the things you do have, not the things that are lacking. Gratitude is pausing for a minute to count your blessings while you have them.

Studies show that practicing gratitude can literally change your brain. Neuroscientists have found that gratitude can boost dopamine and serotonin levels— your brain's "feel good" chemicals.

3 major benefits of practicing gratitude…

  1. Improved Mental Health: Regularly practicing gratitude can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. It shifts your focus from what's lacking to what's abundant in your life. As I mentioned above, gratitude has been found to boost your brain’s “happiness” chemicals.

  2. Enhanced Relationships: Expressing gratitude to others can strengthen your relationships, making them more fulfilling and resilient. This also holds true with spiritual, religious, and most importantly, your relationship with yourself.

  3. Increased Resilience: Practicing gratitude helps you develop tendencies to focus on the silver lining in any situation. This can help you bounce back from adversity or failure by helping you understand what you gained from the situation.

  4. Better Physical Heath: Due to the decrease in stress which occurs when one practices gratefulness, many physical benefits are granted. Some of these include a boosted immune system, lower blood pressure, reduced pain, longer lifespan, and better sleep. For more information, be sure to check out our blog about stress!

Easy Ways to Practice Gratitude Daily

There are many ways one can practice gratitude, but my personal favorite is mindful reflection. After my day’s shower, I close my eyes and think of three things and one person I’m grateful for. These can be anything: a loving family, enough food to survive, WiFi, the body’s abilities… whatever you can think of. It’s a very quick process, not lasting longer than two minutes, but it leaves me feeling happier and more uplifted, giving me a fresher outlook on my life.

However, there are other common ways as well. You can keep a gratitude journal, like in the picture above, where you’d write five thoughtful things you are grateful for. Another one of my favorite things is to keep a gratitude jar, where you decorate a jar and write down things you are grateful for on a piece of paper before putting them into the jar so you can pull one out nightly to read. There’s also writing thank you notes, incorporating gratitude into your meditation process, and more. You can find wonderful ideas and tutorials at this website linked here.

Conclusion:

Remember, it’s the small moments of appreciation that create a ripple effect, making life brighter and more fulfilling. So, take a moment today to count your blessings and watch how gratitude changes your world!
